In the past 100 years Iranian society has grappled with
the idea of modernity, a painful journey, often advances followed by dramatic
set backs. In this struggle many intellectuals, poets, artists, writers, cultural
and political activists have lost their lives; been forced into exile or intended
to be erased from public life and collective memory. Conceptually, biography
itself, a modern phenomenon, has only recently been made as a needed historical
documentation.
Traces is a visual biography of those individuals whose lives and work represent
the troubled and collective struggle of a nation toward modernity.

Traces poem by Shahram Karimi
Wind erases the traces of our hands
the earth pregnant with an enigma
nothing has happened
darling
here my beloved lays in solitude
and the scent of orange blossoms permeates the air
from the bosoms of mourning women
let know
what land your tired hands unravel
thousands sleep beneath this earth here
which one are you looking for?
