About the Young Artists’ Biennial, Bucharest, 2006

E-cart: What was the impact of the 2nd edition of the Young Artists Biennial comparing to the previous edition?

Romelo Pervolovici: We believe the Young Artists Biennial entered a process of normality and, as we expected, the 2nd edition was of impact not only for the people in the visual field in Bucharest. If we keep its standards, we believe every edition will be “more”.

E-cart: From the point of view of the organization, which were the advantages and the difficulties of working with 5 invited curators?

R.P.: It is obvious that it’s more difficult to work with more curators, but there is also an undisputed advantage to be able to gather in one general concept many viewpoints; this working system imposes a wider diversity of the artists’ selection.

E-cart: Which do you think is the specific of the Young Artists Biennial in the context of the contemporary art events in Romania and in the region?

R.P.: The specific of the Young Artists Biennial is given by its very title. Anyway, we don’t see the biennial as in “institution”, but as a promise that, in a relatively short time, Bucharest will have the possibility to be the host of an international event with a certain standard

E-cart: Which are the less satisfactory issues from this edition, and how do you plan on dealing with them for the following edition?

R.P.: Maybe it is too early to make a final analysis, correct, especially that the balance between intention and reality is still fragile, and not always in our favour. We are not yet in the situation that, the moment when one builds an event, one can also talk about its funding, at least 10 per cent of it. Practically, starting from the nicest part, “the beginning”, with the preliminary discussions of intention and the actual, practical realization of the event, one can talk about a constant “harassing”, a constant improvisation, with the aim of making the beautiful intentions come true.

E-cart: Can you tell us if there is already a designated curator or a concept for the 2008 edition?

R.P.: For the biennial in 2008, the invited curator is Mr. Ami Barak; there is already a sketched concept and a strategy for the following edition, and, after the meeting in May this year, we’ll be able to make an official announcement with what the 3rd edition of the Young Artists Biennial will be.
